City of Minneapolis News Release: Minneapolis is fittest city in the nation

Minneapolis is the fittest large city in the U.S., according to new rankings from MapMyFitness.

In its “Fittest of the Fit U.S. Cities” list, Minneapolis topped Denver, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. The rankings were determined by the fitness activities of 1.7 million active MapMyFITNESS community members in more than 2,500 cities nationwide. According to MapMyFitness data, Minneapolis users travelled more than 23,000 miles while exercising in 2011 and burned more than 1.6 million calories.

The Fittest of the Fit Index rankings will be updated on a monthly basis throughout the year based on the self-reported runs, bike rides, walks, gym sessions and other calorie-burning activities recorded by the MapMyFITNESS community members.

Snow Emergency clears streets “like magic” in City’s new public service announcement

You’ve seen infomercials with sales pitches for knives, cookware, laundry detergent and even blankets with sleeves. This month, Minneapolis Snow Emergency joins these products on TV to promote its amazing street-clearing ability and encourage drivers to park out of the way of the plows this winter. The public service announcement, which Comcast is now airing on cable in Minneapolis at no cost to the City, uses off-beat humor to grab the attention of drivers to remind them to sign up for Snow Emergency alerts.

While the PSA parodies infomercials, failing to follow Snow Emergency rules is no laughing matter. The City wants to make sure everyone who parks in Minneapolis is signed up for alerts BEFORE a Snow Emergency is declared. So far this year, there has not been a Snow Emergency declared. There were eight Snow Emergencies declared last season.

When enough snow falls, a Snow Emergency is declared by the City of Minneapolis. Drivers then need to follow Snow Emergency parking rules so plow drivers can do the best job possible. Any vehicles not parked in accordance to the Snow Emergency parking rules may be ticketed and towed.

The new Minneapolis Snow Emergency PSA was written, produced and edited in-house using available City staff. It’s now being aired on a variety of cable channels in Minneapolis, thanks to Comcast. In addition to watching the PSA on the City’s YouTube channel, DVD copies are available upon request.
