Last segment of Lowry Avenue Bridge arches installed

Feb. 15, 2012

Contacts:        Mark Stenglein, Hennepin County Commissioner: 612-348-7882
Paul Backer, Project Engineer: 612-282-1714
Cara Lee, Public Affairs: 612-348-6883

Two gray, gleaming bridge arches reaching 120 feet above the water now span the Mississippi River from North to Northeast Minneapolis.

Earlier this morning, the contractor lifted the last segment of the Lowry Avenue Bridge arches into place with a crane. The keystone segment (of the northern arch) installed this morning is 40 feet long, weighs 73,000 pounds and has a cross-sectional area of 4 feet by 5 feet. The arch pieces are joined together by 16 bolts and welded around each interface.
“This is an impressive milestone in the effort to reopen, and keep open, a vital intra-city connector for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Patient neighbors and commuters are now truly able to see the finished product take shape – it’s a bold and stunning complement to the Minneapolis riverfront,” Commissioner Mark Stenglein said.
Construction on the bridge arches began in early December of last year. The bridge arches are comprised of 22 pieces total – nine pieces per arch and four transverse pieces:
· The four base pieces weigh approximately 130,000 pounds each
· The segments reaching out over the Mississippi River, weigh approximately 70 – 80,000 pounds each.
· The two keystone pieces weigh approximately 73,000 pounds each.
The arches reach a height of 90 feet above the yet-to-be-completed bridge deck and 120 feet above the water. This spring, the contractor will begin installing the stay cables and LED lighting system. The Lowry Avenue Bridge is scheduled to be completed by late summer of this year.

City of Minneapolis News: Minneapolis’ mortgage assistance program helps neighborhoods recover from foreclosure challenges

Since 2008, the City of Minneapolis has helped nearly 350 home buyers purchase homes in neighborhoods stressed by foreclosure through its Minneapolis Advantage Program. The forgivable loan program assists with down payment and closing costs, and helps rebuild neighborhoods, stabilize communities and promote sustainable home ownership.

Funding Available in 2012
Approximately $400,000, or around 25 loans, is available to help potential buyers purchase a foreclosed home in eligible neighborhoods. Based on income eligibility requirements, buyers within 80% of the area median income (approximately $64,000 for a four-member household) can receive up to $20,000 and buyers within 120% of the area median income (approximately $100,700 for a four-member household) can receive up to $10,000. These funds can be used to pay for closing costs and down payment assistance. For more information, call the Greater Metropolitan Housing Corporation, program administrator, at 612-588-3033 or see Minneapolis Advantage Program–Mortgage Assistance.

Minneapolis Advantage partners

The success of this program has spurred additional investment from partners who also want to help with recovery. The City’s investment of $1.2 million in the program has leveraged an additional $3.2 million from Wells Fargo, Minnesota Housing, Federal Home Loan Bank Des Moines and through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Minneapolis Advantage Program performance

  • All homes had to be foreclosed, vacant, or in a high foreclosure-impacted neighborhood
  • Loan recipients purchased homes in 30 Minneapolis neighborhoods
  • Nearly 350 homes have been purchased
  • Nearly 60% of the home buyers moved to Minneapolis from elsewhere
  • 89% of the recipients are first time home buyers
  • 48% of the home buyers are between the ages of 31-50
  • Average household size is two
  • 49% of the homes’ purchase prices are less than $100,000; 39% of purchase prices are between $100,000-$150,000

Radon Test Kits Available for $9

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and the first cause among nonsmokers. More than 21,000 deaths are attributed to radon each year in the U.S. The Minnesota Department of Health estimates that one in three existing Minnesota homes has radon levels that pose a large health risk over many years of exposure. Radon exposure, however, is preventable, and radon problems in homes can be fixed. The first step is to test for radon at home, and the Minnesota Department of Health recommends that all homes in Minnesota be tested for radon. The test kits are easy to use, and postage and testing instructions are included in the kit.

For more information on radon testing and mitigation visit the Minnesota Department of Health website or call at 651-201-4601 or 1-800-798-9050. Anyone interested in mitigating his or her home for radon should consult the Minnesota Department of Health’s list of certified radon mitigation contractors.

Kits will be available for $9 at the City of Minneapolis Development Review, 250 S. Fourth St., Room 300. Minneapolis Development Review’s hours of operation are: Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Minneapolis City News: Minneapolis-St. Paul one of the best communities for staying young

The Minneapolis Saint Paul metro area is one of the best communities in the country for staying young, according to a new report.

The RealAge 2012 Youngest & Oldest Cities in America report ranks the Minneapolis Saint Paul metro area fourth among the top 50 metro areas in the U.S. for staying young. Minneapolis Saint Paul residents were recognized for eating lots of whole grains which helps lower blood pressure, having low stress levels, and getting the right amount of sleep.

To determine the youngest and oldest cities, Real Age – a website devoted to healthy living – analyzed data from its RealAge Test that looks at factors such as cholesterol levels, smoking, marital status, eating habits, stress, employment, social life, and alcohol use to determine your “real age.”

San Francisco was the best city in the country for staying young, according to this report.

City of Minneapolis News: Report shows Minneapolis has become an even better city for bicycling

More bikeways, increased ridership and fewer crashes highlight improvements seen over past year

Already one of the top cities in the country for bicycling, Minneapolis improved even more over the past year. In 2011 bike traffic numbers increased, the bicycle crash rate decreased and the number of bikeways doubled, according to the City of Minneapolis Bicycling Account: a recently released account on the progress made in Minneapolis’ bicycle program.

Some of the findings in the report:

  • Bikeway network expanded - 37 miles of bikeways were added in Minneapolis in 2011. There are now 167 miles of bikeways: just 11 miles from the City goal of having 178 miles of bikeways by 2015.
  • Ridership increased – From 2010-2011 the number of bicyclists increased 25 percent, and from 2007-2011 the number of bicyclists jumped 47 percent.
  • Bike-vehicle collision rate decreased – Over the past 18 years, the annual bicyclist-motorist crash rate decreased from 10 percent to 4 percent of all bicycle commuters. This drop comes at a time when bicycling has increased dramatically.

A total of 35 miles of on-street bikeways were added, including 3.1 miles on repaved and restriped streets downtown Minneapolis. There are now 80 miles of on-street bikeways in Minneapolis: an 80 percent increase over last year. Improvements in 2011 included the completion of some major bike thoroughfares:

  • Cedar Lake Trail – The final leg of the nation’s first bike freeway was completed in 2011, making it possible for bicyclists to travel from western suburbs to Downtown and beyond without riding along streets with motor vehicle traffic.
  • RiverLake Greenway – Existing streets were enhanced for bike traffic, creating a bicycle boulevard that extends from the Chain of Lakes to the Mississippi River.
  • The Hiawatha LRT Trail connection – This link will help bicyclist get to and from Downtown from the trail along the Hiawatha light-rail line.
  • Bryant Avenue Bikeway – This bicycle boulevard connects downtown to south Minneapolis, providing a safer alternative to traveling down the busy nearby arterial, Lyndale Avenue.

Many people already use bikes for transportation in Minneapolis, and the City strives to make bicycling an even more attractive option for others. By choosing to bike instead of drive, residents help keep down traffic congestion, improve our air quality and reduce our dependence on oil. Plus, biking is a healthy way to get around; it boosts physical fitness and lowers health care costs. Minneapolis is among the top nations in the country for bicycle community, according to a U.S. Census comparison of the nation’s 50 biggest cities.
